I use an older model low profile oreck air purifier with the electrostatic filter. I put it in an open window and then I close the window down on top of it. I only use it during those days that are clear with very clean air quality. I use the furnace whole house blower fan to circulate that fresh air through the whole house. When I use it in the winter my furnace has to run a little bit more. When I use it in the summer my air conditioner has to run a little bit more to take out the humidity. This system has worked very well for me for 25 years.
If you already use 20 X 20 box fans, consider taping a decent filter on the back of it. You'd be amazed how much it filters out of the air and start to question the effectiveness of your central air filtered system. Filter it or be the filter :-)
